FireFox like most web browsers has a built-in password system. In some cases, users have reported that their password database has disappeared. They can not longer retrieve their passwords for sites that they know should be in the system.
- Do you use the Password Manager to fill in passwords?
- Make sure that you do not make changes to the field of a prefilled password on the web site.
- A new entered or removed password will be updated to the Password Manager to reflect changes made by you on a web site.
- A change to the web site, for example, the login form on a different page, would prevent the password manager from matching the site. The password manager uses the URL to match the site & passwords.
Here’s a few things to check:
- Open the Firefox Options panel (click Tools > Options.. in the menu bar)
- Click the “Security” icon. Make sure “Remember passwords” is checked.
- Click the “Exceptions…” button and make sure no important sites are listed.
- Click the “Privacy” icon. Make sure “Always clear my private data when I close Firefox” is not checked.
- Check your Firefox profile directory, and see if the signons/2/3.txt file is empty. If it is empty, then your passwords are no longer available to firefox.
- Try restarting Firefox… This has been shown to temporarily resolve the problem for some people.
Some finger pointing has Panda Antivirus as one potential culprit, please see Mozilla support threat. At this point, I have not found a reliable solution…
Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any suggestions for this issue…
