Z-410: How ZFS is slowly making its way to Mac OS X

A commercial ZFS solution is (still) coming to Mac OS X, thanks to former Apple filesystem and OS engineer Don Brady (who previously worked on the abandoned internal Apple project to port ZFS). Brady and his company, Ten’s Complement, just launched a limited private beta in hopes to have the software polished and ready for a summer launch this year.

Ars spoke with Brady, who has a long history engineering filesystems for Mac OS and Mac OS X, to find out a little about his previous work with ZFS at Apple, and what Mac users can expect to gain from Ten’s Complement’s port of ZFS

Apple releases iPhoto 9.1.1

Apple has released iPhoto 9.1.1….Here’s the release notes….

About iPhoto 9.1.1

This update adds new email options to iPhoto ’11. It also improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues. Specific fixes include:

Adds a preference allowing photos to be emailed using an external email application
Adds “Classic” and “Journal” themes to email.
Photos attached to an email can now be sized to Small, Medium or Large
Improves reliability when upgrading a library from an earlier version of iPhoto
iPhoto now correctly preserves the sort order of Events after upgrading a library
Event titles displayed in headers can now be edited in Photos view
Addresses a problem that could cause duplicate photos to be added to a MobileMe album
Scrolling overlay now correctly displays ratings when photos are sorted by rating
Photos are now sorted correctly when a rating is changed and photos are sorted by rating
Fixes a problem that could cause text formatting controls to become inaccessible when editing a calendar

The update is recommended for all users of iPhoto ’11

Is Adobe the new Microsoft?

People sometimes ask me why I am not a fan of Adobe?

The main reason is that they have very lackluster Macintosh support. Misbehaving Installers, slow installers, and quality control that Microsoft would never accept.

Microsoft is criticized for throwing out releasing and then over the next dozen or so patches slowly eliminating bugs (and introducing new ones). But Adobe has just finally added preliminary support for Stage Video, a technology aimed to reduce heavy CPU usage during video playback. I suspect this is a direct move to try to reduce the criticism from Apple regarding the high drain on the system when running Flash on the Macintosh.

But is this too little too late? Time will tell.

A Simple “AirPrint Hacktivator”

I typically don’t make “hacks” to my system, but I just tried the Netputing’s AirPrint Hacktivator and it clearly works… And works quite simply.

Run the tool, turn on AirPort Printing, and then delete and re-add your printer (so that the changes are seen).

HOW TO Hacktivate:

1. Launch AirPrintHacktivator

2. Click on the togle switch:

3. Enter the admin password:

4. A window will appear instructing you to remove/add/share the printer you want to use with AirPrint:

Click OK.

5. The Print & Fax System Preference window will open to allow you to perform the remove/add/share task.

That’s it! Simple, and it works…

You need an Battle.net Authenticator!

Folks,

I urge anyone that is using a blizzard game to add an Authenticator to their battle.net account.. Assuming of course, that you have an Smartphone (iPhone, or android device). Or to buy an Authenticator from Blizzard. The Authenticator’s from Blizzard are key fob style devices that serve the same purpose as the mobile application, they are effectively free except for shipping and handling…

What do the authenticator’s do? Normally you need to enter your battle.net username & password, to login to a Battle.net based game. When you have Battle.net set to use the authenticator’s, you will be asked for a 3rd code, your authenticator code.

The authenticator code’s last for roughly 60 seconds, the green bar shows you how long before the code changes…

This gives your account a “3rd” password, that randomly changes. Yes, it can be annoying to sit down and start to play WOW, Starcraft 2, etc, and realize you need your mobile device that’s across the room.

But this is minor irritation to the danger of someone “hacking” your battle.net account and stripping your characters of their gear.

I highly recommend that you consider adding this 3rd factor protection to your battle.net account. With this enabled it’s almost impossible for someone to hack your account, unless they can de-activate the authenticator setting on your battle.net account.
