(See Figure 1)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-overview.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-240\" title=\"applemail-overview\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-overview.gif\" alt=\"applemail-overview\" width=\"657\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-overview.gif 821w, http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-overview-300x188.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 657px) 100vw, 657px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>LEFT<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>pane lists your<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Mail Folders<\/strong>, including:\n<ul>\n<li>Your<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Inbox folder<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>with all your incoming messages.<\/li>\n<li>Your<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Drafts folder<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>with messages you are writing.<\/li>\n<li>Your<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Sent folder<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>with messages you have sent.<\/li>\n<li>Your<strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Trash folder<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>with messages you have deleted, but are still stored until you empty the trash.<\/li>\n<li>Any other folders you have created.<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>TOP<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>pane is the<strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>list of messages<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>in the selected folder. When you click on a message in the list, the details of the message appear in the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>BOTTOM<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>pane.<\/li>\n<li>The<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>BOTTOM<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>pane shows you the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Message Preview<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Figure 1<\/div>\n<p>[<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacs.uci.edu\/email\/applemail-basics.html#top\">Back to Top<\/a><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Sending A Test Message<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Select<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>New Message<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>from the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>File<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>menu or click the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>New<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>icon in the toolbar. (See Figure 2)\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-new.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-236 alignnone\" title=\"applemail-new\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-new.gif\" alt=\"applemail-new\" width=\"77\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 2<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Enter in<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>your<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>email address<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>in the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>To:<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>field. (See Figure 3)\n<ul>\n<li>To send to more than one person, use commas between addresses.<\/li>\n<li>You can also add addresses in the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Cc:<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>(Carbon copy) or<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Bcc:<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>(Blind carbon copy) fields. To show the Bcc field, select<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Bcc<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>from the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>View<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>menu.<\/li>\n<li>If the address is in your Address Book or in your Previous Recipients list, you only need to type the first few letters of the address. The rest will be filled in for you. If the person is in your address book, the name will be displayed in a blue oval instead of the actual address. See below.<\/li>\n<li>If you have configured Mail to use the GAL, Mail will search the directory for the correct address, even it you don&#8217;t have it stored in your address book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Enter in a<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>subject line<\/strong>. This should be a brief description of what the message is about.<\/li>\n<li>Enter in the<strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>text of the message<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>in the main body.\n<ul>\n<li>Mail will automatically check for spelling errors and underline them in red. If you check and you have no new mail, try again in a few minutes.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Get Mail<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>button in the main toolbar. (See Figure 4) You can also select<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Get New Mail<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>from the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Mailbox<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>menu.<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>\n<div>\nFigure 4<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Select the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>message<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>in the message list to open it in the message preview pane in the lower section. To view it in a larger window, double-click on the message to open it in a new window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacs.uci.edu\/email\/applemail-basics.html#top\">Back to Top<\/a><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Creating New Mail Folders<\/h2>\n<p><strong>To create a new folder in your NACS MailBox account (IMAP only):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Mailbox<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>menu, select<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>New Mailbox<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>From the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Location<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>drop down menu, select your UCI account. (See Figure 5)<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n( If you are using<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>POP<\/strong>, you can only create folders on your computer. (See Figure 6)\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-newfolder.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-237\" title=\"applemail-newfolder\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-newfolder.gif\" alt=\"applemail-newfolder\" width=\"276\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 6<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>If you are using<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>IMAP<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>this new folder is stored on the server and will be available to you from any other IMAP connection, such as Webmail or another configuration of Apple Mail or Thunderbird on another computer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacs.uci.edu\/email\/applemail-basics.html#top\">Back to Top<\/a><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Moving Messages Between Folders<\/h2>\n<p>You will use this same procedure whether you are moving messages between folders on the server, between a folder on the server and one on your hard drive, or between folders on your hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>You can use any of these three methods for moving messages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Select the message<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>you want to move, select<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Move To<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>from the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Message<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>menu, and then select the folder to which you want to move the message, or<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control-click on the message<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>you want to move, and select the destination folder from the drop-down list under<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Move To<\/strong>, or<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drag the message header<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>from the message list to a folder in the folder list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacs.uci.edu\/email\/applemail-basics.html#top\">Back to Top<\/a><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Deleting a Message<\/h2>\n<p>If you are using IMAP, your messages are stored on the server. It is important to delete messages you will no longer need to ensure you do not go over your quota. You can also move messages to your a folder on your hard drive by using the methods above.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select your<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>test message<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>by clicking on it once.<\/li>\n<li>Click the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Delete<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>button in the toolbar.<\/li>\n<li>If you change your mind and want to<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>UNDELETE<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>a message, you&#8217;ll find it in the folder named<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Trash<\/strong>. Simply move this message back to your Inbox if you still need it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>By default, Apple Mail will erase messages older than one week that you leave in the Trash. You can change this in<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Preferences &gt; Accounts &gt; MailBox behaviors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacs.uci.edu\/email\/applemail-basics.html#top\">Back to Top<\/a><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Junk Mail<\/h2>\n<p>Apple Mail has an easy to use Junk Mail filter built in. You can use this in combination with<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a><strong>My Email Option&#8217;s Spam Filtering<\/strong><\/a><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>to filter out unwanted email.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Junk mail filtering should be enabled by default, but is likely in<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Training<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>mode. This will flag messages as Junk but keep them in your Inbox.<\/li>\n<li>From the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Mail<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>menu, select<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Preferences<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Junk Mail<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>button in the top toolbar. (See Figure 7)<\/li>\n<li>Make sure<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Enable Junk mail filtering<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>is checked.<\/li>\n<li>Select<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Move it to the Junk mailbox (Automatic)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Close the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Preferences<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>window.<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-junkprefs.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-235\" title=\"applemail-junkprefs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-junkprefs.gif\" alt=\"applemail-junkprefs\" width=\"574\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-junkprefs.gif 574w, http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/applemail-junkprefs-300x229.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 7<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mail will now move any message it thinks is Junk to the Junk folder.<\/li>\n<li>If you receive a message that is not marked as Junk, but you believe it should be, simply click the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Junk<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>button in the top toolbar. The message will be moved to the Junk folder.<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAs you mark messages, you &#8220;train&#8221; Mail about what you consider to be junk mail, and Mail updates its internal junk mail database accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>If Mail marks a message as Junk but it is not, simply click the<span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><strong>Not Junk<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>button in the message preview. The message will have to manually be moved back to the Inbox from the Junk folder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"center\">This should give you an overview of how to use Apple Mail.
