{"id":4612,"date":"2010-10-24T11:04:16","date_gmt":"2010-10-24T15:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/?p=4612"},"modified":"2010-10-24T11:04:22","modified_gmt":"2010-10-24T15:04:22","slug":"review-out-of-the-dark-by-david-weber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/2010\/10\/review-out-of-the-dark-by-david-weber\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Out of the Dark by David Weber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Out of the Dark<\/strong> is a tough book to write a review for, especially if your not trying to give out spoilers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I seriously think that Alien invasion books were perfected by John Ringo, but it seems like David Weber wanted to touch this genre. &nbsp;<strong>Out of the Dark<\/strong> is a good book, definitely a well crafted, and written book. &nbsp;It offers some new twists, mainly with the the Interstellar Hegemony, but I was disappointed with the revelation about 30 or so pages from the end.<\/p>\n<p>It would not have been so annoying, except for the fact that it really wasn&#8217;t foreshadowed. &nbsp;If you haven&#8217;t already heard, this serious military-sf book takes a major twist at the end and moves to horror fantasy. &nbsp;While this shift isn&#8217;t necessarily a bad thing, there is almost no foreshadowing of this, nor any serious examination of it in the book.<\/p>\n<p>[Spoiler Warning]<\/p>\n<p>For 90% of the book, we have a relatively Hard Science Fiction \/ Invasion book, with no hints of the supernatural, and then all of a sudden we have Vampires helping defend the Earth. &nbsp;Please note, these Vlad Drakula style vampires, pure supernatural vampires.<\/p>\n<p>[Not so Spoilerish]<\/p>\n<p>While I would love to see a sequel, since the Supernatural elements are now out in the open, and we can see their interaction with the Hegemony, and the Shongari&#8230; &nbsp;And then See how Earth rebuilds itself, etc&#8230; &nbsp;It almost feels like Mr. Weber just didn&#8217;t have a Hard Science Fiction way to prevent the Shongari from destroying the Earth, and then decided what could defeat them? &nbsp;I know Vampires!<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned this doesn&#8217;t make the book bad, I just found this to be a jarring change to the book. &nbsp;Overall, it&#8217;s a decent read, but I&#8217;d prefer a more consistent (eg. <a href=\"http:\/\/astore.amazon.com\/theschoarch-20?_encoding=UTF8&amp;node=42\">Honor Harrington<\/a>) universe&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?lt1=_blank&amp;bc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;npa=1&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;fc1=000000&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;t=theschoarch-20&amp;o=1&amp;p=8&amp;l=as1&amp;m=amazon&amp;f=ifr&amp;md=10FE9736YVPPT7A0FBG2&amp;asins=0765324121\" style=\"width: 120px; height: 240px;\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Out of the Dark is a tough book to write a review for, especially if your not trying to give out spoilers&#8230; I seriously think that Alien invasion books were perfected by John Ringo, but it seems like David Weber wanted to touch this genre. &nbsp;Out of the Dark is a good book, definitely a <a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/2010\/10\/review-out-of-the-dark-by-david-weber\/\">[&hellip;]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0},"categories":[67],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4612"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4612"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4612\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4612"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4612"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4612"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}<!-- WP Super Cache is installed but broken.
