{"id":5685,"date":"2011-02-25T17:47:36","date_gmt":"2011-02-25T22:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/?p=5685"},"modified":"2011-02-25T17:57:56","modified_gmt":"2011-02-25T22:57:56","slug":"the-difference-between-plurality-majority-voting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.schollnick.net\/wordpress\/2011\/02\/the-difference-between-plurality-majority-voting\/","title":{"rendered":"The difference between Plurality &#038; Majority voting&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently a motion came up to the Apple Shareholders &amp; the Apple Board on changing the way the Board Members were elected.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) &#8212; Apple Inc. investors, gathered today at the company&#8217;s annual shareholder meeting, passed a measure that would elect board members with a majority vote, rather than a plurality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So previously the Apple Board members were elected on a Plurality basis. \u00c2\u00a0What is a Plurality? \u00c2\u00a0Simply stated, the most votes for any choice in an election wins, and the winner does not need a majority vote.<\/p>\n<p>So, in a three-way vote, with 100 people voting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Candidate 1, gets 45 votes<\/li>\n<li>Candidate 2, gets 40 votes<\/li>\n<li>Candidate 3, gets 15 votes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Who wins? \u00c2\u00a0In a majority vote, where the winner needs to have 50% or more of the votes, no one would win. \u00c2\u00a0In a plurality vote, Candidate 1 would win, since he has received the most votes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I presume the Board members prefer the plurality vote, since it reduces the chances of a needing a secondary vote, since you do not need a majority to win the vote. \u00c2\u00a0The shareholders presumably prefer the majority vote, since it helps make sure that the majority of the Shareholders agree with the vote.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently a motion came up to the Apple Shareholders &amp; the Apple Board on changing the way the Board Members were elected.
