From the what are they smoking department….

Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD, plus lots of TV series. We want to advertise the breadth of our incredible DVD offering so that as many people as possible know it still exists, and it is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection on DVD. DVD by mail may not last forever, but we want it to last as long as possible.

I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We feel we need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolve, without having to maintain compatibility with our DVD by mail service.

So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are becoming two quite different businesses, with very different cost structures, different benefits that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently. It’s hard for me to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary and best: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”.

I am not sure how Netflix can justify splitting the DVD by mail segment into another company, and expect it to survive….

The only justification, that I can think of is as follows:

  • They believe that they will be able to license the DVD & streaming content licenses for less, since they will be negotiating separately.
  • They believe that the DVD by mail portion is dying and doomed to death, and do not wish to doom both portions of the company.
But more importantly, I do not see any way for this to be beneficial for the customer.
  • The cost is the same for the customer, unless you reduce your qwikster queue size..
  • Yes, they do plan to support Video Game rentals, but how long before they have a really viable selection?
  • Separate queues, which you can not access from the other platform…
Yes, they are attempting to justify they previous announcements, and this gives us some more information, but I

When you get pulled over for speeding, say “It’s a fair cop”, and accept your ticket.  Challenge it, if you must, but the cop is doing his job.

When the copy says “Please be careful pulling out into traffic”, it’s worth the extra few seconds to be careful…

I suspect this Gentlemen will have a few more moving violations added to his ticket…

What do you think?

Frontier Communications’ DSL modem rental fee is now as high as $6.99 a month in some of the phone company’s service areas, $14.99 a month if you want the convenience of a wireless router built-in. That’s $84 and $189 a year, respectively, for equipment that cost the company a fraction of that.

I can go and buy the modem at a store and it would be less than one year of rental

Frontier’s Modem Rental Fee: $7/Month; Wireless Router Fee Now $14.99/Month

This is highway robbery, and yet another reason that I recommend Time Warner over Frontier…  But even so, I would prefer a 3rd option.  Time Warner’s prices are not that great either…

After all, in Jana, 100 Mps is only around $44 – 50 per month, whereas from Comcast, that’s $100 per month…  In France, the same 100 Mps is only $33 per month…

Evidently people on the Internet don’t understand when you try something new…

Valve, please give Erin a chance, at least a call….  That’s all she’s asking for…

On July 7, two robbers (one carrying a rifle) entered a Los Angeles County smoke shop and demanded money from the shop’s owner. Within seconds the robbers were accosted by the owner’s dog, a ferociously yapping Chihuahua, who so unnerved them they ran away. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has released the surveillance video of the robbery–the Chihuahua begins his attack at the 6 second mark. The robbers flee ten seconds later.

Evidently you can’t trust the police that much, at least not the off-duty officers at Miami International Airport…

The Fullerton off-duty Police officer was arrested for stealing an iPad at the TSA checkpoint last month (5/2011).

Excuse me, he shouldn’t be an officer…  He should know that the TSA checkpoints are video “taped”.  He expected to get away with it?  This is a 6+ year veteran of the force, and makes around $86,000 per year.

I’m just disgusted…  Read the article here…  Fullerton Cop Arrested for Stealing iPad at TSA Checkpoint

When you look it up in the Best Buy inventory system.  Evidently, the Best Buy stores are reserving units for people, but the inventory system does not have any concept of an hold or reserve..  So I left work a few minutes early, rushed to Best Buy, and was told that there are no iPad2′s available for purchase, because they are being held for reserves.

So, call your Best Buy store, before you go looking for the unit that is being shown in the inventory system…
