Dragon Quest IX talk about some crazy stuff (Puff-Puff)

Destructoid discusses Dragon Quest IX, and some of the crazy things that are in the JRPG.

But the point is that I’m hardly an expert on the entirety of this crazy Dragon Quest thing, and that’s especially true of a little thing called the “puff-puff.”

What the hell is the puff-puff? I’m glad you asked. Just last week, I found myself asking that same question — around the same time I was writing that twopart thing. When all was said and done, the puff-puff just wasn’t relevant to what I was saying in those two pieces. So now it’s time to answer once and for all, “What is the puff-puff?”

…….

One of my favorite things about Dragon Quest IX is the DQVC service, a specialized store offering new items and quests. A couple of Fridays ago, I unlocked a quest called “Puff-Puff Performance.” To any trueDragon Quest fan, this would have immediately meant something quite glorious, but as for me, I simply wandered over to the quest giver expecting a fairly typical mission, perhaps one involving dancing.
However, the quest giver asked me to find an herb called “cheer-me-up.” Hmm … something called a “puff-puff” that involved a magical herb? I thought I had an idea of what was going on now. This silly little JRPG with an E10+ ESRB rating was going to get me high as fuck. Ah, the perks of being an angel. Innocence? Ha!

What are celebrities doing these days?

Here’s some famous celebrities and what they have been doing since they dropped off our radar…

  • Danica McKellar, who played Winnie in The Wonder Years, turned into a hot math geek who now teaches teenage girls that math is cool (and still does some acting on the side)
  • Mayim Bialik – once better known as “Blossom” – has a PhD in neuroscience and is writing a book on parenting. (Though she still does some acting as well; you might have seen her on the season finale of The Big Bang Theory.)
  • Charlie Korsmo, who I remember best as the kid in Hook, is a law professor at Brooklyn Law School and teaches torts, corporate law, and land use.
  • Brian May, lead guitarist for Queen, is an astrophysicist. And he’s currently the chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.
  • Ilan Mitchell-Smith, known for his role in Weird Science, has a PhD in English and teaches at California State University Long Beach.
  • Greg Gaffin (lead singer of punk band Bad Religion) got his PhD at Cornell. He teaches life sciences and paleontology at UCLA
  • Peter Weller, best known as Robocop but more importantly as Buckaroo Banzai, either has or is working on a PhD in Roman Architecture and teaches at Syracuse. He was featured in a History Channel documentary on the same subject.

Happy Birthday, HP Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) – the finest and most inspirational horror writer of the 20th Century.

To learn more about one of my favourite authors check out his Wikipedia entry or The HP Lovecraft Archive.

To discover his impact on role-playing games, and the evergreen Call Of Cthulhu game, there is no better place to start than Yog-Sothoth.Com.

For more Lovecraftian goodness – including one of the finest fan films ever produced (and progress reports on a second) – it’s also worth visiting The HP Lovecraft Historical Society.
